Environmental Sciences

Mathematics

Medicine & Health

Microbiology

Zoology

Projects may be done by one student or by teams of two or three students, and must be limited to a table space of 36" (91 cm) wide by 30" (76 cm) deep. The top of the display should not be more than 215 cm above floor level. Fair-provided tables will not exceed a height of 36" (91 cm).

Projects should conform to The Ohio Academy of Science's Display and Safety Regulations. In particular, displays may contain only a poster and report; no equipment or samples may be included in the display.

The complete set of regulations can be found at Rules or at the website of The Ohio Academy of Science: http://www.ohiosci.org/sds.htm.

Important: Projects involving human research must be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board before experimentation begins. This includes any surveys or questionnaires to be used in a project. See Institutional Review Board for details.

Important: Some projects involving research risks or issues and special protocols must be reviewed by a Scientific Review Committee before experimentation begins. These are projects involving:

(1) live vertebrate animals, including observation projects,

(2) controlled substances,

(3) potentially hazardous biological agents

See Scientific Review Committee for details.

The Scientific Review Committee at OSU Marion can be used to review and approve these projects. In this case, please be sure that the paperwork is sent in early enough so that projects can be approved before experimentation begins.

Important: Projects that involve hazardous substances or devices need to be approved by a Designated Supervisor before experimentation begins.

Projects in the above categories that have not received the appropriate prior approval will be disqualified.

For these projects, additional forms will need to be completed. See Forms for details.

Many of these projects will also require the supervision of a Qualified Scientist, who should possess an earned doctoral/professional degree in the biological or medical sciences as it relates to the student's area of research. However, a master's degree with equivalent experience and/or expertise in the student's area of research is acceptable when approved by a Scientific Review Committee.

The Qualified Scientist must be thoroughly familiar with the local, state, and federal regulations that govern the student's area of research.

More details may be found by downloading the rules for ISEF-affiliated fairs: ISEF Rules

This is a pdf file, which requires Adobe® Reader®, a free download from the Adobe® Web site:

The rules may also be found at Intel® ISEF Document Library

To help a student determine which rules apply to a project and what forms are needed, the Society for Science & the Public has developed a Rules Wizard. Additional information may be found at Rules or Rules and Guidelines.
