The Non-degreed

These sodas have not opted for higher education, content with being addressed as "Mr" (or "Mr."). All three I've seen are male; are there any explicitly female Pepper impersonators?

Mr. aahh!
  • Giant Eagle
  • Giant Eagle, New Castle, PA (courtesy of James Schul)
  • My brother reports that this store was selling both Mr. aahh and Mr. ahhh! (see below). Despite the similar names, this seems a little odd, since the two supermarkets are unrelated as far as I know, but he picked up a 6 of each as proof. Gotta love the guy for that.
Mr. ahhh!
Mr. Green
  • SoBe Beverages
  • Warehouse grocery in Nazareth, PA
  • Though they bill it as an "energizing flavored soda with ginseng", Mr. Green's producers (a division of Pepsico) are consciously associating it with Dr Pepper according to this blurb from the Beverage Digest. I could make the taste association, though my body seems to be immune to its energizing effects.
Mr Pibb, Diet Mr Pibb, Pibb Xtra, Pibb Zero
  • Coca-Cola
  • Mr Pibb: Hy-Vee, Lawrence, KS (formerly widely available)
  • Diet Mr Pibb: Super 1 Foods, Tyler, TX (formerly limited in its availability)
  • Pibb Xtra: Hy-Vee, Lawrence, KS (becoming widely available)
  • Pibb Zero: Jewel-Osco, Oswego, IL (still only available in larger markets)
Mr. Pig
  • Piggly Wiggly
  • Piggly Wiggly, Lugoff, SC
  • This is an elusive little devil. There are Piggly Wiggly stores in several states, but after checking what seems like hundreds, it seems that most of them do not carry this product. One that does is located near Columbia, SC.
Mr. Sipp

The Sound-alikes

Give these two credit: they're trying to hide the obvious reference to their model. Their taste, unfortunately, begs for more assurance that they're really trying to copy Dr Pepper and not cough syrup.

Skipper
  • Safeway (Select)
  • Safeway, Scottsbluff, NE
The Skipper
  • Homeland Stores
  • Homeland, Liberal, KS
  • "The Skipper" was being sold in a can with this design at Safeway several years ago

The Southern Heritage

Dr Pepper was born in Texas, and that fact hasn't been lost on some of its copycats. Here are two that play up this connection.

Southern Lightning
  • Wal-Mart (Sam's Choice)
  • Wal-Mart, Lawrence, KS
  • This is how Dr Thunder was known before it completed its education.
Texas Fizz
  • Phar-Mor (Quality & Value)
  • Phar-Mor, Overland Park, KS

The Extreme Knockoff

So, Dr Pepper's not eXXXXXtreme enough for ya? Well, here's the beverage worthy of your lifestyle!

XDP
  • Unique Beverage Company, LLC (Wired Energy Drinks)
  • QFC, Port Townsend, WA
  • I almost missed this one. It was alone on the top shelf of a long cooler in a supermarket, totally out of place. The X is still making me uncomfortable, so this one is staying on the shelf until finals week, when I'll have some EXTREME grading to do.

The Other One

Some folks just have to be different. If it weren't for the dark red can, I never would have guessed that this was a Pepper impostor, but one taste assured me it was, and not a bad one either.

Braum's Special
  • W.H. Braum, Inc
  • Braum's, Parsons, KS
  • Known primarily in the southern plains for their dairy products, Braum's also has its own line of sodas and other goodies.
