Proposed New County for Iowa
Hoover County |
- County Seat: Bancroft
- Formed from: Kossuth
- Hoover County is probably the least necessary of all of my proposed counties. I admit that the only reasons I have for dividing Kossuth County is to complete the pattern of rectangular and square counties in northern Iowa, and to make Iowa the ninth state with 100 or more counties. Hoover County would probably have the smallest population of any county in the state, but it would still be a fitting memorial to the only president from Iowa.

According to The History of Iowa by Benjamin Gue, several other new counties were proposed for Iowa during the 19th century, and a few were in existence for a short time. Two ex-counties, Bancroft and Crocker, were essentially the area I described above. Two others, Belknap and Grimes, were proposed for the eastern part of Pottawattamie County. Another, Kishkekosh, was removed from the map in midcentury, presumably for sounding too silly. Further information can be gathered from this source.
