Proposed New Counties for Florida

Biscayne County

  • County Seat: Homestead
  • Formed from: Dade and Monroe
  • The less urbanized southern part of Dade County, plus some of the mainland part of Monroe County, form Biscayne County. The residents of this part of Monroe County currently have to travel through another county and across a hundred miles of the Gulf of Mexico to get to the courthouse at Key West. The rest of mainland Monroe County would be transferred to Collier County.

Canaveral County

  • County Seat: Titusville
  • Formed from: Brevard
  • Titusville is currently the county seat of Brevard County, but that name would stay with the southern half of the county under this plan, and the northern half would become Canaveral County. Melbourne would be the seat of the new Brevard County. The division would place everything from Rockledge and Cocoa Beach northward in Canaveral County.
