Integrated Teaching and Learning holds as its mission
the preparation of professionals who are broadly concerned with
multidisciplinary approaches to education, and bringing to bear such
approaches on problems of teaching and learning for diverse populations
of students.
Our constituencies include beginning and experienced teachers who employ integrated curricula and "specialist" teachers who work in integrated ways across subject matters with others across early childhood, elementary school, middle school, high school and university settings. Further, we include a community-based constituency of educational professionals who are interested in classrooms or in teaching from an integrated perspective.
This program area is centrally defined by a continuing examination of issues related to integration. Discussions about the variations in definitions and meanings of integration have informed our planning and define the wide and interdisciplinary purview of our interests. Watchwords for the program include "learner-centered" and developmental approaches, holistic teaching, social construction of classroom culture, inquiry, and informal and experience-based approaches to curriculum. These interests define our common beliefs. These beliefs and interests span pre-k to university teaching and draw on diverse disciplinary and subject matter expertise. The ITL program is located on five campuses-the Columbus campus and four regional campuses (Lima, Marion, Mansfield and Newark). Students apply to one campus but may take courses and work with faculty on any campus. The Marion campus has an undergraduate education major (BSEd), Master in Education (M.Ed.) and Master of Art (M.A.) programs.
